What is Manglik dosha?
In Vedic astrology, a dosha is a difficult planetary configuration whose energy creates friction in specific areas of life. Manglik dosha (also called Kuja dosha or Mangal dosha) is the configuration that arises when Mars (मंगल) sits in particular houses of the birth chart.
Mars is the warrior of the zodiac. He is energetic, decisive, combative and fiery. When that energy lands in houses governing the home, the spouse, longevity or intimacy, classical astrologers say it can introduce arguments, restlessness or distance in marriage. Hence the careful attention paid to Mars during kundali matching.
Important to remember: Manglik dosha is a tendency, not a verdict. Plenty of celebrated marriages have one or both partners as Manglik. The dosha’s real impact depends on Mars’s sign, dignity, aspects on it from other planets, and a list of seven classical cancellation rules that we walk through below.
The 6 dosha houses
Manglik dosha is triggered when Mars sits in houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12 measured from the Lagna (some traditions also count from the Moon and from Venus, but the Lagna count is the standard). Each house brings its own flavour of friction:
- 1st (Tanu Bhava). Self, body, temperament. Mars here can make the native short-tempered or impatient with their partner.
- 2nd (Dhana Bhava). Family, speech, finances. Mars here can introduce sharpness in family conversations and friction over money.
- 4th (Sukha Bhava). Home, comfort, mother. Mars here disturbs domestic peace and can lead to multiple relocations.
- 7th (Yuvati Bhava). Marriage, partnerships. Highest impact. Mars sits directly on the marriage axis.
- 8th (Ayur Bhava). Longevity, in-laws, transformation. Highest impact. Mars here is the most-discussed Manglik placement.
- 12th (Vyaya Bhava). Bedroom, foreign travel, expenses. Mars here is linked to bedroom incompatibility and overspending.
Houses 7 and 8 are the classical "high-severity" positions. Houses 1, 2, 4 and 12 are usually moderate.
The 7 cancellation factors
This is the part most online "Manglik calculators" silently skip. Classical Vedic texts list seven specific situations in which the Manglik dosha is partially or fully cancelled. A serious astrologer always checks every one of these before declaring severity.
- Mars in its own sign. Mars is the lord of Aries (Mesha) and Scorpio (Vrishchika). When it sits in either of those signs, even in a dosha house, it is at home and behaves much more cooperatively.
- Mars exalted. Mars is exalted in Capricorn (Makara). Exaltation flips a difficult Mars into a productive, disciplined force.
- Friendly placement in the dosha house. Specific sign-house combinations cancel out: 7th house in Cancer or Capricorn, 8th house in Sagittarius or Pisces, 12th house in Taurus or Libra.
- Yogakaraka Mars. For Cancer (Karka) and Leo (Simha) ascendants, Mars is a Yogakaraka, which means it is the natural giver of success. Such a Mars never harms marriage.
- Jupiter’s aspect on Mars. Jupiter is the great pacifier of the zodiac. Whenever Jupiter aspects Mars (from the 5th, 7th or 9th house), Mars’s rough edges are softened.
- Both partners are Manglik. The most quoted cancellation rule. When two Manglik people marry, the doshas cancel each other out.
- Age 28 onwards. Classical texts hold that the severity of Manglik dosha drops sharply after the native crosses 28 years of age. Marriages contracted later in life are very rarely affected.
Our free Manglik Check applies every one of these rules to your chart and shows you the resulting severity instead of a binary yes/no.
Severity grading: it is a spectrum
Once Mars and its cancellations are evaluated, the result is graded on a four-step ladder rather than declared as a flat yes/no:
The severity grade is what really matters. A "Mild" Manglik chart is essentially business-as-usual. A "High" chart needs a careful full-kundali reading and partner-matching.
Does it actually impact marriage?
Honest answer: sometimes, and rarely as much as people fear. The factors that genuinely move the needle are:
- Mars’s sign and dignity. A Manglik Mars in its own sign is harmless. A debilitated Mars in a dosha house is a different story.
- Aspects on the 7th house. The marriage house is what we actually care about. Beneficial aspects on the 7th can absorb a Manglik Mars elsewhere.
- Strength of Venus. Venus is the natural significator of marriage. A strong, dignified Venus can offset a difficult Mars.
- Age at marriage. Crossing 28 reliably reduces friction.
- Partner’s chart. If the partner is also Manglik, or has strong Jupiter, the dosha effectively cancels.
The blunt truth: less than 10% of "Manglik" charts are ever in the high-severity bracket. The rest are mild or fully cancelled.
Common myths to ignore
- "Manglik means the marriage will fail." Not true. Most Manglik charts are mild; a strong chart easily absorbs the dosha.
- "You must marry a tree first." The kumbh vivah ritual exists in some communities, but it is not universal and certainly not required by classical astrology.
- "Only the 7th house counts." Wrong. Six houses (1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 12) are involved and cancellation rules apply to all of them.
- "Software cannot detect cancellations." Only basic calculators skip them. ParivaarPro’s engine evaluates all seven rules automatically.
- "Gemstones fix it instantly." Red coral (मूंगा) is sometimes recommended, but only by a competent astrologer after full chart review. Mantras and karma yoga are usually safer remedies.
Traditional remedies
When astrologers do recommend remedies for high-severity Manglik charts, the classical list is calm and practical:
- Recite the Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays.
- Donate red items (red cloth, masoor dal, jaggery) to the needy on Tuesdays.
- Keep a fast on Tuesdays, eating one light meal after sunset.
- Visit a Hanuman or Mangal temple weekly and offer red flowers.
- Recite the Mangal beej mantra: Om Angarkaaya Namah 108 times daily.
- Wear Red Coral (Moonga) only after a competent astrologer’s confirmation.
These remedies are about channelling Mars’s energy outward through devotion and discipline, instead of letting it ferment as household friction.
Manglik in Kundali Matching
When two charts are matched for marriage, Manglik dosha is checked alongside the 36-point Ashtakoota score. The four possibilities are:
- Neither partner Manglik: best case, no dosha concern.
- Both partners Manglik: doshas cancel, no concern.
- One Manglik, one not: depends entirely on the severity grade and the rest of the chart.
- Manglik with cancellation: treated like the not-Manglik side.
Our Kundali Matching tool cross-checks Manglik status for both partners along with the Ashtakoota score so you get a complete picture in one place.
Manglik Check Free: Complete Online Evaluation मुफ़्त मांगलिक दोष कैलकुलेटर
Performing a precise manglik check free online is the first step toward resolving uncertainties about your horoscope. Instead of relying on rigid, fear-inducing calculators that declare a blanket "yes" or "no," modern seekers deserve a system that evaluates the full spectrum of Vedic rules.
Our free online Manglik evaluation checks your natal Mars placement against all six potential dosha houses, but more importantly, it scans your chart for the seven classical cancellation factors. It determines if factors like a friendly sign, planetary aspects, or specific planetary configurations neutralize the fiery energy of Mars, giving you an honest, high-fidelity severity grade.
How to check your own chart in 5 steps
- Generate your free Janam Kundali.
- Find Mars in the chart and note its house number from the Lagna.
- If Mars is in 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12, you are nominally Manglik. Otherwise you are not.
- Check Mars’s sign. Mesha, Vrishchika or Makara cancels the dosha. Friendly sign-house combinations also cancel.
- Check Jupiter’s aspect on Mars. If Jupiter aspects from 5/7/9, the dosha is cancelled.
Or skip the manual work and use our Manglik Check, which runs all seven cancellation rules and outputs a severity grade.
The modern, balanced view
In the 21st century, treating Manglik dosha as a dealbreaker is outdated. Most respected modern astrologers see it as one factor among many, weighed against the strength of Venus, the 7th house, the navamsa chart and the Ashtakoota score. Two well-matched charts with a mild Manglik dosha is a stronger combination than two non-Manglik charts that fail on Nadi or Bhakoot.
The most useful framing: read Manglik dosha as a "use this energy consciously" signal, not a "stop the wedding" verdict. With the cancellation rules applied honestly, only a small fraction of charts are in the truly serious bracket.
Quick FAQ
- Is Manglik dosha calculated only from the Lagna?
- The Lagna count is the primary one. Some traditions also check from the Moon and from Venus. If Mars is in a dosha house from any of the three, mild Manglik effects can appear, but Lagna is what most calculators use.
- Can two Manglik people definitely marry?
- Yes. The "both Manglik" cancellation is a classical rule and it is widely accepted. Many Indian families specifically look for a Manglik partner when their child has the dosha.
- Is online Manglik check accurate?
- Only when the engine applies the seven cancellation rules. Avoid calculators that just say yes/no based on Mars’s house alone.
- Should I worry if I am Manglik?
- Probably not, unless the severity grade is "High". Even then, partner matching, age and the broader chart usually handle it.
