Meaning of Janam Kundali
The word Janam means birth, and Kundali literally means a coiled or rolled scroll. In Vedic astrology (Jyotish) the term refers to a diagram of the heavens captured at the exact moment, date and place of an individual’s birth. Ancient astrologers wrote these on rolls of bhojpatra bark, which is where the name comes from.
In modern terms, your Kundali shows the position of the Sun, Moon and seven classical planets across the twelve zodiac signs (rashis) and twenty-seven nakshatras. The Lagna (लग्न) is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your exact birth time. It anchors the entire chart. Once the Lagna is fixed, the twelve houses (bhavas) are counted from it, each ruling a specific area of life:

The 27 Nakshatras
