Vastu Shastra Kya Hota Hai?वास्तु शास्त्र क्या होता है? The Vedic science of building.

Vastu Shastra (वास्तु शास्त्र) is the ancient Indian science of architecture and spatial design. The word vastu means dwelling, and shastra means a body of knowledge. Together the term refers to a 5,000-year-old framework for aligning the built environment with the elements, the directions and the cosmic geometry. This guide explains how it actually works and the practical guidelines for a home.

What is Vastu Shastra?

Vastu Shastra is a system that prescribes how to design, orient and arrange any built space (home, office, temple, factory) so that it supports the wellbeing of those who occupy it. The framework rests on three pillars: the five elements (Panchabhuta), the eight directions (Disha), and the Vastu Purusha Mandala (the geometric grid that maps divine energy onto a plot of land).

The original texts are part of the wider Sthapatya Veda. Key references include Brihat Samhita, Vishwakarma Prakash, Manasara Shilpa Shastra and Mayamatam.

The Panchabhuta (5 elements)

Every space, in Vastu thought, is composed of and balances the five elements:

Akash (आकाश)Space. Centre of the home (Brahmasthan). Should stay open and clean.
Vayu (वायु)Air. Northwest. Movement, ventilation, communication.
Agni (अग्नि)Fire. Southeast. Kitchen, energy, metabolism.
Jal (जल)Water. Northeast. Wells, water tanks, prayer rooms.
Prithvi (पृथ्वी)Earth. Southwest. Stability, master bedroom, heaviest mass.

The 8 directions and their lords

Each cardinal and inter-cardinal direction is governed by a specific lokpala (presiding deity) in the Vastu Purusha Mandala:

  • North (Uttar): Kuber, lord of wealth. Ideal for cash boxes and lockers.
  • East (Purva): Indra, lord of dawn. Sunlight, prayer rooms.
  • South (Dakshin): Yama. Heavy storage, heads of beds face here for restful sleep.
  • West (Paschim): Varuna. Children’s rooms, dining.
  • Northeast (Ishaan): Ishaan/Shiva. Most sacred. Pooja room, water source.
  • Southeast (Agneya): Agni. Kitchen.
  • Northwest (Vayavya): Vayu. Guest rooms, ventilation.
  • Southwest (Nairutya): Nairuti. Master bedroom, heaviest furniture.

The Vastu Purusha Mandala

The Vastu Purusha Mandala is the geometric grid (typically 9x9 or 8x8) that maps the body of Vastu Purusha across a plot. The head lies in the northeast, the feet in the southwest, with 45 lokpalas distributed across the cells. The centre (Brahmasthan) is the most sacred point and is classically left open or used for an atrium.

Modern Vastu interprets the mandala flexibly. The principle is: place activity according to where its element thrives, keep the centre uncluttered, and let the northeast remain the lightest part of the space.

The main entrance

The main door is the most consequential single decision in Vastu. Classical preferences:

  • Best: North, East, Northeast.
  • Acceptable with remedies: West.
  • Best avoided: South, Southwest. South is Yama’s direction.

Modern apartment-living often constrains door direction. In that case, treat the door respectfully (clean threshold, no clutter near it, working bell, name plate) and place a Tulsi plant or a small lamp near the entrance.

Kitchen Vastu

The kitchen is governed by Agni (fire) and is best placed in the southeast. Within the kitchen:

  • Cook facing east. Stove in the southeast corner.
  • Sink and stove not adjacent (water and fire conflict).
  • Refrigerator best in southwest or south.
  • Storage along south or west walls.
  • Ventilation via the eastern or northern window.
  • Avoid kitchen directly above or below a pooja room or master bedroom.

Bedroom Vastu

The master bedroom should be in the southwest (the earth-element corner) because the heaviest furniture and the head of the household belong here for stability:

  • Bed head pointing south or west; never north (head magnetism opposes earth’s magnetic field).
  • No mirror facing the bed directly.
  • No prayer altar inside the bedroom (energy conflict).
  • Avoid sleeping with the head pointing toward a bathroom wall.
  • Children’s bedrooms in the west or northwest.
  • Guest bedrooms in the northwest.

Pooja room

The pooja room is the most sacred space inside a home and belongs in the northeast. Other guidelines:

  • Idols facing east or west, never south.
  • Worshipper sits facing east or north.
  • Pooja room should not share a wall with a bathroom.
  • Ground-floor placement preferred over basement.
  • Keep the area uncluttered, well-lit and ventilated.

Office and study Vastu

  • Sit facing east or north. East for creative work, north for finance.
  • Solid wall behind the chair (the “mountain” principle).
  • Cash and important documents in the north.
  • Study desk in the east-side room for students.
  • Avoid sitting under exposed beams.

Common Vastu defects and remedies

Most Indian apartments cannot achieve perfect Vastu. The practical approach is to identify defects and remediate them rather than rebuild. Common defects:

  • Toilet in northeast: place a small Vastu pyramid; do not use as the primary bathroom.
  • Kitchen in northeast: keep the stove minimal; use the room sparingly.
  • Master bedroom in northeast: shift to southwest if possible; otherwise add weight (heavy cupboard) to the southwest corner.
  • South-facing entrance: keep the threshold clean, place a Tulsi plant nearby, hang a brass Om symbol.
  • Cluttered Brahmasthan (centre): remove furniture from the centre; keep it as open as possible.

Common myths to ignore

  • “You must rebuild your house for Vastu.” No. 90% of Vastu work is rearrangement and remediation.
  • “Pyramids fix everything.” Vastu pyramids and yantras help, but only as supplements, not replacements.
  • “Vastu is the same as Feng Shui.” Different traditions. Vastu is older and uses sidereal directions. Feng Shui uses chi flow.
  • “A bad-Vastu home is doomed.” Vastu influences. It does not determine.

Quick FAQ

Should I consult a Vastu expert before buying a flat?
Yes for big purchases. For rentals, use the standard guidelines; you can compensate with arrangement.
Is Vastu mandatory for happiness?

What is the single most important Vastu rule?
Keep the northeast (Ishaan) clean, light and uncluttered. It influences mind and prosperity.
