What is Anka Shastra?
Anka Shastra is the Indian system of numerology, distinct from but related to Western numerology. It maps every single-digit number from 1 to 9 to a ruling planet (Sun, Moon, Jupiter, Rahu, Mercury, Venus, Ketu, Saturn, Mars). The combination of those planetary energies in your personal numbers is read as a forecast of personality, strengths, and life direction.
Two numbers anchor the system. Mulank (root number) is derived from the day of the month you were born. Bhagyank (destiny number) is derived from the entire birth date. Together they describe who you are and where life is pulling you.
How to calculate your numbers
Mulank is the digital root of the day-of-month:
- Born on the 7th: Mulank is 7.
- Born on the 14th: 1 + 4 = 5. Mulank is 5.
- Born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2. Mulank is 2.
Bhagyank reduces the full date of birth (DD-MM-YYYY) to a single digit:
- Date 14-07-1995: 1+4+0+7+1+9+9+5 = 36 → 3+6 = 9. Bhagyank is 9.
- Date 27-12-2005: 2+7+1+2+2+0+0+5 = 19 → 1+9 = 10 → 1. Bhagyank is 1.
The 9 ruling planets
Each digit from 1 to 9 corresponds to a classical planet:
Mulank 1 to 9 — personality at a glance
- Mulank 1 (Sun): leader, original, ego-driven, big vision.
- Mulank 2 (Moon): emotional, gentle, family-rooted, intuitive.
- Mulank 3 (Jupiter): optimistic, philosophical, teacher, traveller.
- Mulank 4 (Rahu): unconventional, tech-friendly, restless, future-leaning.
- Mulank 5 (Mercury): communicative, witty, business-minded, free-spirited.
- Mulank 6 (Venus): artistic, romantic, hospitality-loving, comfort-seeking.
- Mulank 7 (Ketu): spiritual, introspective, water-loving, philosopher.
- Mulank 8 (Saturn): disciplined, ambitious, slow-burn success, late bloomer.
- Mulank 9 (Mars): courageous, energetic, defender, action-first.
Bhagyank — the destiny note
Where Mulank describes the seed personality, Bhagyank describes the soil and weather (the destiny path). When Mulank and Bhagyank align (same digit, or friendly digits), the personality and life direction reinforce each other and progress feels relatively smooth.
When they conflict (enemy planets), the native often feels pulled in opposite directions: the personality wants one thing, life keeps offering another. The job becomes reconciliation, often through deliberate effort or spiritual practice.
Namank — name numerology
Beyond birth-date numbers, Anka Shastra also calculates Namank, the numerology of the name. Each letter is mapped to a digit (Chaldean or Pythagorean tables both exist). The sum of the digits, reduced to a single digit, is the Namank. A name whose Namank is friendly to the Mulank is considered supportive; a name whose Namank conflicts is considered draining.
This is why some Indian families make small spelling adjustments (an extra ‘a’ in “Surya” or a different transliteration) to align Namank with Mulank. Take this with caution. Numerology spelling-shifts rarely solve anything that the chart itself does not also support.
Lucky days, colours, gemstones
Each Mulank has classically associated lucky and unlucky factors:
- Mulank 1: Sunday, Gold, Ruby. Avoid Saturday.
- Mulank 2: Monday, White, Pearl. Avoid Tuesday.
- Mulank 3: Thursday, Yellow, Yellow Sapphire.
- Mulank 4: Saturday, Grey, Hessonite (Gomed).
- Mulank 5: Wednesday, Green, Emerald (Panna).
- Mulank 6: Friday, Pink, Diamond.
- Mulank 7: Monday, Light Yellow, Cat’s Eye (Lehsuniya).
- Mulank 8: Saturday, Black, Blue Sapphire (Neelam).
- Mulank 9: Tuesday, Red, Red Coral (Moonga).
Treat these as soft preferences, not hard rules. Wear gemstones only after a full Kundali consultation.
Numerology vs Jyotish: which to trust?
Honest answer: Jyotish (Vedic astrology) is the deeper system. Numerology is a useful first cut. The chart shows every house, planet, transit and dasha. Numerology compresses all of that into two digits.
Use numerology for quick personality colour and lucky-day choice. Use the Kundali for serious decisions, marriage, career choice, timing.
Common myths
- “Change your name to a 5 and life turns around.” Almost never. Karma is bigger than spelling.
- “Avoid your unlucky number completely.” Excessive avoidance can be a self-fulfilling distraction.
- “Mulank determines your spouse compatibility.” Use Kundali Matching for marriage, not numerology alone.
Quick FAQ
