What is a Nakshatra?
A nakshatra is a 13°20′ arc of the ecliptic, named for the bright star or asterism that anchors that segment. The system predates the modern 12-rashi zodiac and is thought to be the original calendrical framework of Vedic astronomy.
The Moon transits one nakshatra in approximately 24 hours, which makes the nakshatra a daily rhythm in contrast to the rashi’s 60-hour rhythm. This is why classical astrologers consider nakshatra-level reading more granular than rashi-level reading.
Janma Nakshatra (जन्म नक्षत्र)
The nakshatra in which your Moon was located at birth is your Janma Nakshatra. It is a single most important factor in classical Vedic astrology because:
- It determines the very first Mahadasha of your Vimshottari Dasha sequence.
- It dictates your traditional “starting letter” for the name (used in many naming ceremonies).
- It defines temperamental gana, yoni, varna and gana koota during marriage matching.
- It carries a presiding deity whose mantra you can practice as a personal sadhana.
The 27 nakshatras at a glance
In sequence from Ashwini (the first nakshatra of Aries) to Revati (the last nakshatra of Pisces):
The 4 padas
Every nakshatra is further divided into 4 quarters called padas, each spanning 3°20′. The pada of your Janma Nakshatra refines the reading. The 27 nakshatras × 4 padas = 108 padas, mapping precisely to the 108-bead japa mala used in mantra practice.
Each pada also corresponds to a specific syllable, which is why traditional naming ceremonies suggest a starting letter based on Janma Nakshatra and pada.
The 3 Ganas — temperamental tribes
Vedic seers classified the 27 nakshatras into three temperamental tribes:
- Deva Gana (divine, gentle): Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Revati.
- Manushya Gana (human, balanced): Bharani, Rohini, Ardra, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada.
- Rakshasa Gana (intense, disruptive): Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Chitra, Vishakha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha.
Gana matching plays a role in Ashtakoota Guna Milan during marriage. Read the full breakdown in our long-form Kundali Matching article.
Nakshatra and Vimshottari Dasha
The 27 nakshatras are grouped into 9 sub-cycles, each ruled by a specific planet. The planet ruling your Janma Nakshatra becomes the lord of your first Mahadasha. This is the foundational link between nakshatras and the 120-year Vimshottari Dasha system.

Nakshatra activity categories
Beyond ganas, classical texts also sort nakshatras by activity-fitness. The categories help muhurat selection:
- Chara (movable): Punarvasu, Swati, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha. Best for travel.
- Sthira (fixed): Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada. Best for marriage.
- Ugra (fierce): Bharani, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha, Purva Bhadrapada. Best for surgery.
- Mishra (mixed): Krittika, Vishakha. Best for routine work.
- Laghu (light): Hasta, Ashwini, Pushya. Best for trade and quick starts.
- Mridu (gentle): Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha, Revati. Best for art and creative work.
- Tikshna (sharp): Ardra, Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Mula. Best for breakups and sharp action.
Symbols and presiding deities
Each nakshatra has a presiding deity (devata) and a symbol. The deity gives the nakshatra its spiritual texture. For example, Ashwini is presided by the Ashwini Kumars (twin divine physicians) and is symbolised by a horse-head; Rohini is presided by Brahma and symbolised by a chariot; Mula is presided by Niriti (goddess of dissolution) and symbolised by a tied bunch of roots.
Reciting the deity’s mantra on the nakshatra’s day (every 27th day, when the Moon revisits your Janma Nakshatra) is a classical practice for reinforcement.
Why nakshatras are still used
- More precise than rashis. 27 segments versus 12 means richer detail.
- Personal naming. Indian ceremonies still pick the starting letter from nakshatra and pada.
- Muhurat selection. Festival and ceremony dates depend on nakshatra suitability.
- Dasha calculation. The entire 120-year Vimshottari rests on the Janma Nakshatra.
- Compatibility. Most Indian marriage rules depend on nakshatra matching.

Quick FAQ
- How is nakshatra different from rashi?
- 27 nakshatras versus 12 rashis. Higher resolution. The Moon transits a nakshatra in roughly 24 hours.
- Can two siblings share a nakshatra?
- Yes, but rarely the exact same pada. Pada-level differences create distinct life patterns.
- Is the nakshatra system used outside Vedic astrology?
- Yes. Chinese astrology has 28 lunar mansions, similar but not identical to the Vedic 27.
- Should I worry about Mula or Jyeshtha nakshatra?
- No. They are intense but classical remedies (specific pujas in the first 27 days of birth) handle them fully.
