Navratna Aur Ratna Kya Hote Hain?नवरत्न क्या होते हैं? The nine astrological gemstones, decoded.

Navratna (नवरत्न) means “nine gems”. In Vedic gemology, every classical planet is associated with one specific primary gemstone whose vibration is said to amplify the planet’s benefic energy. This guide walks through all nine ratnas, the cheaper substitutes (uparatnas), how to choose the right gemstone, the right metal, the right finger, and the right day to wear it.

What is Navratna?

Navratna combines nava (nine) and ratna(gem). The system pairs each of the nine grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu) with a specific gemstone whose mineral structure, colour and vibration are believed to harmonise with that planet’s frequency.

A Navratna ornament typically arranges all nine gems with Sun’s ruby at the centre and the others positioned in the eight directions, mirroring the Vastu Purusha Mandala.

The 9 ratnas at a glance

Manik (Ruby) (Sun)Authority, leadership, father.
Moti (Pearl) (Moon)Mind, mother, emotional peace.
Moonga (Red Coral) (Mars)Courage, energy, siblings.
Panna (Emerald) (Mercury)Intellect, business, study.
Pukhraj (Yellow Sapphire) (Jupiter)Wisdom, fortune, marriage.
Heera (Diamond) (Venus)Love, art, comfort.
Neelam (Blue Sapphire) (Saturn)Discipline, longevity, breakthrough.
Gomed (Hessonite) (Rahu)Foreign work, obstacles cleared.
Lehsuniya (Cat's Eye) (Ketu)Spiritual depth, sudden challenges.

Manik (Ruby) — the Sun gem

Ruby is the gemstone of the Sun. It is worn to strengthen authority, leadership, and father-related fortune. Recommended for Leo (Simha) Lagna or natives whose Sun is weak in the chart but not afflicted. Wear in gold, on the ring finger of the right hand, on a Sunday morning during Shukla Paksha.

Moti (Pearl) — the Moon gem

Pearl is the gemstone of the Moon. Worn for emotional stability, peace of mind, and to soothe the mother-related area of the chart. Cancer (Karka) Lagna or weak natal Moon. Set in silver, ring or little finger, Monday morning.

Moonga (Red Coral) — the Mars gem

Red coral, an organic gem from the sea, is the Mars gemstone. Worn to strengthen courage, energy and brother-related fortune. Often recommended for Aries or Scorpio Lagnas, or for Manglik natives after careful consultation. Set in gold or copper, ring finger, Tuesday morning.

Panna (Emerald) — the Mercury gem

Emerald is the Mercury gemstone. Worn for intellect, communication, business success and education-related fortune. Recommended for Gemini and Virgo Lagnas or for weak Mercury. Set in gold, little finger, Wednesday morning.

Pukhraj (Yellow Sapphire) — the Jupiter gem

Yellow sapphire is the Jupiter gemstone, considered the most universally beneficial of the nine. Worn for wisdom, fortune, marriage (especially for women whose 7th house is weak), and dharma. Sagittarius and Pisces Lagnas, or weak natal Jupiter. Set in gold, index finger, Thursday morning.

Pukhraj is one of the few gemstones a competent astrologer recommends without much hesitation. Most charts handle it well.

Heera (Diamond) — the Venus gem

Diamond is the Venus gemstone. Worn for marital harmony, art-related success, and luxury. Taurus and Libra Lagnas or weak Venus. Set in white gold or platinum, ring or little finger, Friday morning.

Neelam (Blue Sapphire) — the Saturn gem

Blue sapphire is the Saturn gemstone, and the most potentially powerful gem in the entire Navratna list. When it works, it works fast. When it backfires, it backfires equally fast. Never wear neelam without a 3-day trial from a competent astrologer.

Worn for discipline, longevity, and breakthrough during Saturn-related challenges. Capricorn and Aquarius Lagnas. Set in silver, middle finger, Saturday morning.

Gomed (Hessonite) — the Rahu gem

Hessonite garnet is the Rahu gemstone. Worn during difficult Rahu Mahadashas, for unexplained obstacles, legal matters and foreign-related work. Set in silver or panchdhatu, middle finger, Saturday evening.

Lehsuniya (Cat's Eye) — the Ketu gem

Cat’s eye chrysoberyl is the Ketu gemstone. Worn during Ketu Mahadasha or when Ketu causes specific difficulties (sudden losses, accidents, spiritual unrest). Set in silver, middle finger, Tuesday or Saturday evening.

Uparatna — the affordable substitutes

Each primary ratna has cheaper substitutes that share approximate properties:

  • Manik: Garnet, Spinel.
  • Moti: Moonstone, White Coral.
  • Moonga: Carnelian.
  • Panna: Peridot, Green Tourmaline, Aventurine.
  • Pukhraj: Yellow Topaz, Citrine.
  • Heera: White Sapphire, Zircon, Quartz crystal.
  • Neelam: Amethyst, Lapis Lazuli, Blue Tourmaline.
  • Gomed: Hessonite garnet itself is the affordable option.
  • Lehsuniya: Tiger’s Eye.

Substitutes work well when the primary gem is too expensive or when the chart only needs mild support.

Rules for choosing and wearing a ratna

  1. Always consult a chart first. Wearing a wrong gem can amplify a malefic planet.
  2. Use the right minimum carat. Classical texts prescribe 3 carats for moonstones, 5 for ruby and sapphire, 7 for emerald.
  3. Use the prescribed metal. Gold for Sun-Mars-Jupiter, silver for Moon-Saturn-Rahu-Ketu, white gold for Venus.
  4. Energise the gem first. Wash in unboiled milk and water, recite the planet’s mantra 108 times.
  5. Wear on the prescribed day in the prescribed direction.
  6. Use a 3-day trial for neelam. Do not commit without testing.
  7. Avoid combining incompatible gems. Diamond and ruby together can clash. Pearl and hessonite together are usually avoided.

Common myths and warnings

  • “Anyone can wear pukhraj.” Mostly true, but not always. Strong but afflicted Jupiter can deliver mixed results.
  • “A heavier gem is always better.” Wrong. Above the threshold, more weight just costs more.
  • “A treated gem works the same.” No. Natural, untreated gemstones are required.
  • “Wearing nine gems together (Navratna ornament) helps everyone.” Often true for general protection, less so for specific issues.

Quick FAQ

Are gemstone remedies always required?
No. Mantras, charity, and discipline are equally classical and often safer.
How long does a ratna take to show effects?
Typically 21 to 90 days. Neelam can show effects in 3 days.
Can I wear a ratna I bought myself?
Yes, but get the chart confirmed first. Self-prescribed gems are how most ratna problems start.
Do synthetic stones work?
Vedic gemology requires natural, untreated stones. Synthetics do not carry the same vibration.
