Vimshottari Dasha Calculatorविंशोत्तरी दशा: How to Compute Your 120-Year Life Cycles

The Vimshottari Dasha system is the gold standard of predictive Vedic astrology. Spanning a complete 120-year cycle, this system determines which planet rules over your life at any given second. By computing your birth Nakshatra, our calculator maps your nested Mahadasha, Antardasha, and Pratyantardasha cycles to pinpoint when major life shifts occur.

Introduction: The Predictive Time Engine

While transit positions show the ambient climate of the solar system right now, the Vimshottari Dasha system determines your personal receptivity to that climate. It acts as the internal clock of your soul. If a planet is highly favorable in your birth chart but its Dasha never runs, its full blessings remain dormant. Conversely, a planet's Dasha activates its promises—good or challenging.

Maharishi Parashara, the father of Vedic astrology, declared Vimshottari as the most reliable predictive dasha system for the current epoch (Kali Yuga), where the maximum natural lifespan is considered to be 120 years.

How the Dasha Calculator Works

The computation of your personal Vimshottari Dasha requires three specific variables:

  1. Exact Moon Degree: The calculator identifies the precise longitude of the Moon at your second of birth.
  2. Janma Nakshatra: The zodiac is divided into 27 lunar mansions (Nakshatras) of 13°20' each. The sign and degree of the Moon tell us which Nakshatra you were born under.
  3. Dasha Balance: Each Nakshatra is ruled by one of the nine planetary lords. The exact degree of the Moon within that Nakshatra determines how much of the first Dasha period has already passed, and how much "balance" you start life with.

The 9 Planetary Durations (दशा काल)

The 120-year planetary timeline is distributed unevenly across the nine major grahas in a fixed sequence:

Ketu (7 Years)

Sequence Lord: केतु

Rules detachment, isolation, spiritual pursuits, sudden breaks, and past-life intuitive knowledge.
Venus (Shukra) (20 Years)

Sequence Lord: शुक्र

The longest dasha, governing love, luxury, marriage, vehicles, arts, relationships, and worldly comfort.
Sun (Surya) (6 Years)

Sequence Lord: सूर्य

Governs career authority, government honors, health, fatherly relationships, and self-realization.
Moon (Chandra) (10 Years)

Sequence Lord: चंद्र

Governs emotions, mental peace, relationship with mother, domestic happiness, and public popularity.
Mars (Mangal) (7 Years)

Sequence Lord: मंगल

Rules physical drive, real estate, courage, sibling bonds, conflicts, and engineering feats.
Rahu (18 Years)

Sequence Lord: राहु

Rules obsessive desires, foreign connections, technological success, sudden rise/fall, and illusions.
Jupiter (Guru) (16 Years)

Sequence Lord: गुरु

Governs higher wisdom, wealth, children, teachers, religious faith, and overall prosperity.
Saturn (Shani) (19 Years)

Sequence Lord: शनि

Rules discipline, patience, hard labor, career struggles, delay, longevity, and structural success.
Mercury (Budha) (17 Years)

Sequence Lord: बुध

Rules intellect, business, communication skills, logic, humor, mathematics, and analytical abilities.

Nakshatra to Dasha Mapping

The nine planets rule over the 27 Nakshatras in sets of three. Your first Dasha is determined by this mapping:

The Layers: Mahadasha, Antardasha, and Pratyantardasha

Vimshottari is read in nested cycles, which allows the calculator to narrow down events to specific days:

  • Mahadasha (Mahl): The outermost layer, lasting between 6 and 20 years. It defines the major chapter theme.
  • Antardasha (Bhukti): The sub-period. Every Mahadasha is split into 9 sub-periods, proportional to the planet's dasha span. It lasts several months to a couple of years.
  • Pratyantardasha (Sub-Sub Period): The sub-sub-period, lasting weeks or days. It dictates immediate, daily events and shifts.

Astrological Remedies for Challenging Dashas

If a calculator reveals that you are running the Dasha of a malefic, debilitated, or severely aspected planet, do not panic. Vedic astrology provides specific remedies to harmonize difficult energies:

  • Mantra Chanting: Reciting the seed mantra (Beej Mantra) of the Dasha lord on its designated weekday.
  • Charity (Daan): Donating items associated with the planet (e.g., black sesame seeds for Saturn, green lentils for Mercury).
  • Deity Worship: Praying to the presiding deity of the planet (e.g., Lord Shiva for Rahu, Lord Hanuman for Mars/Saturn).

Vimshottari Dasha FAQ (अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल)

Vimshottari Dasha calculator kaise kaam karta hai?
It uses the exact degree of the Moon at birth to find your Janma Nakshatra and its ruling planet, then computes how much of that planet’s period remains (the dasha balance) and builds the full 120-year sequence of Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantardasha from there.
Vimshottari Dasha kitne saal ki hoti hai?
The full cycle spans 120 years, distributed across nine planets: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17 years.
Can I change my birth time to fix a bad Dasha?
No. The birth time must be accurate — the dasha sequence is derived from the Moon’s exact position, so shifting the time only invalidates the result.
Why does my favourable Jupiter dasha feel unproductive?
Even a natural benefic like Jupiter can occupy a difficult house (6th, 8th or 12th) or rule difficult houses in your chart, which changes how its dasha actually manifests.
Is Saturn Mahadasha always bad?
Not at all. For Taurus or Libra ascendants, or when Saturn is strong in its own sign, its 19-year dasha can bring discipline, stability and lasting wealth rather than hardship.
How do I know which Dasha I am running now?
Generate your free Kundali and the engine prints your current Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantardasha with start and end dates, based on your birth Nakshatra.
